Owls soccer falls to the Orioles

On September 29th, the Slinger varsity boys’ soccer team played their biggest rival, Hartford, under the lights at their home stadium.  Jordan DeLaurier scored the first goal of the night, putting the Owls up 1-0.  However, Hartford later responded with 2 goals, and the final score was 2-1 in a well-fought match.  The Owls’ next match is at Wisconsin Lutheran on Tuesday, October 6th.

Slinger Girls’ Tennis Battled on Weekend, Prepare for Sub-sectionals

The Slinger varsity tennis girls competed in the Hartford-Slinger Invite Tournament this past weekend and finished in fourth place. Slinger singles players secured three runner-up medals from Emma Sievers at one singles, Kylie Coffin at three singles, and McKenna Gartzke at four singles. Rachel Daniels was the consolation champion at two singles. Gartzke and Daniels played one doubles throughout the conference season and split to play singles on weekend tournaments; both have been very successful in their respective singles positions. The team of Josie Bjorklund and Kate Wallschlaeger earned third place at one doubles. The ten varsity girls will practice hard this week in preparation for the second half of their season. They will compete in sub-sectionals at the Pleasant Valley Tennis and Fitness Club on Tuesday, October 6 at 8:00 a.m.

The Halloween Movie Season Starts off with a Bang with the Return of the Monsters!

The monsters are back in the first movie of the Halloween season, Hotel Transylvania 2. The Drac Pack is back including Dracula--voiced by Adam Sandler, Frankenstein--voiced by Kevin James, The Wolf Man--voiced by Steve Buscemi, The Invisible Man--voiced by David Spade, and The Mummy--voiced by Keegan-Michael Key. Also returning is Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez) and Jonathan (voiced by Andy Samberg) with their new half human, half vampire son, Dennis (voiced by Asher Blinkoff).

Mavis and Jonathan get married and have a kid of their own. Drac is waiting for Dennis to grow his fangs, but that doesn’t seem to be happening. Because Dennis is not becoming a monster, Mavis wants to move her family to California. With this in mind, Dracula and his pals try to help Dennis get his fangs before he has to leave.

While not the most morally intriguing, it does have its high points. The relationship between the characters is very good and the movie does an excellent job of showcasing emotional moments between characters. While the animation of the first Hotel Transylvania was a little cartoony, Hotel Transylvania 2 is drenched in it. This helps make the humor of this movie very fresh and lively. The voice acting from the main cast of Hotel Transylvania 2 is very good, and as for the side characters like Grandpa Mike (played Nick Offerman) and Vlad (played by the great comic actor Mel Brooks). Hotel Transylvania 2, while the target audience is mainly kids, it will still entertain you with its wonderful animation and characters. See it at a theater near you.

Owls Football Clinch Playoff Spot

Owls football clinches playoff spot in a 37-14 domination of the West Bend East Suns (1-5).  The Slinger defense controlled the Suns, while Sophomore Tyler Evans led all scorers with two receiving touchdowns from quarterback Jerod Scheff and another rushing.  Slinger (6-0) hosts Oconomowoc (6-0) next Friday for Homecoming in a matchup of two undefeated Wisconsin Little Ten front runners.

Slinger girls' tennis falls to Watertown in last conference match

This past Thursday, the Slinger girls' tennis team lost 2-5 to the worthy opponents of Watertown. All of the matches were battles though as it was eight of the ten Varsity girls' last conference meet of their high school tennis careers. Fighting past sundown, underneath the glaring lights and with the many cheers of teammates and parents, Emma Sievers and Kate Wallschlaeger each won their matches by playing through a third set and refusing to give up. Moving forward, the girls will be practicing hard tomorrow in preparation for the Slinger/Hartford tournament this Saturday.

Slinger Stomps Fond du Lac on Senior Night

Monday evening was an emotional night for eight of the ten girls on the varsity tennis team as they defeated Fond du Lac 5-2 and defended Slinger’s home courts one more time. Seniors were recognized before the meet and given gifts made by the underclassmen of the tennis team. Victories were fittingly senior-dominated and came from seniors Emma Sievers, Rachel Daniels, and Kylie Coffin at one, two, and three singles. The senior doubles team of Julia Fox and Olivia Boden earned a victory for the team as well.

Varsity Girls Tennis Team Shines in Cedarburg

The varsity girls tennis team placed third in the Bulldog Invite tournament hosted by Cedarburg this past weekend. Eight teams were present at this tournament, and the girls battled through matches all throughout the day and into the evening. Second place finishes came from Emma Sievers, Kylie Coffin, and McKenna Gartzke at one, three, and four singles respectively. Joanna Fox and Kaitlyn Loff secured a second place for Slinger at four doubles. Third place finishes came from the doubles duos of Kate Wallschlaeger and Josie Bjorklund at one doubles and Olivia Boden and Julia Fox and two doubles. All team members contributed well-fought points to help earn the third place win.

Slinger beats Beaver Dam 20-7

The mighty Owls move to 5-0 on the gridiron after holding off Beaver Dam 20-7 in Slinger Friday night.  The Owls defense bent but did not break as they stopped the surging Golden Beavers multiple times in the red zone.  Slinger will travel to West Bend next Friday to take on the East Suns (1-4) for their next Wisconsin Little Ten matchup.

West Bend West defeats Slinger in tennis

In the midst of dark clouds threatening rain and a delay of game, the girls of Slinger tennis lost to West Bend West, 3-4, this Thursday. Maggie Aumann and Victoria Volkmann won the final match, battling through three sets and making the outcome close. The girls face Fond du Lac at Slinger this coming Monday at four o'clock.

The Rookery Is Open For Business

The Rookery is presently the only store that’s run by students and made for them. I asked Mrs. Smessaert, the organizer of The Rookery questions about the Rookery’s effect on the High School . Mrs. Smessaert stated , “I think it has brought up the school spirit.  It has given so many more people the chance to show their pride.  It has provided a hands on learning environment.  It has helped raise food items to donate to the pantry.  In all it has been a positive thing!”. Mrs. Smessaert mentioned that the best part about the Rookery was, ”seeing how much the students learn and the real world work experience they get out of it!”. Future plans for the Rookery include continuing to improve the stores fixtures and installing new glass doors and lighting.  They also are in the process of making a kiosk to sell gear at sporting events.  New this year at the Rookery is merchandise with awesome new looks, graphics, and style. Also new this year is the popular Spirit Jerseys. Stay tuned for more exciting Rookery news!

Owls Defeat Golden Beavers

Slinger varsity tennis secured its third conference win on Tuesday against Beaver Dam. The match was played on Beaver Dam's courts and was held on their team's parents night. The Slinger girls won 5-2 with singles victories sweeping the competition from all positions including Emma Sievers at one, Josie Bjorklund at two, Kate Wallschlaeger at three, and Kylie Coffin at four. In a three set match, seniors Olivia Boden and Julia Foxx won at two doubles and provided Slinger with a valuable team point.

Slinger Boys’ Soccer defeats Watertown 2-1

Slinger started their match strong, with Jordan DeLaurier scoring early in the second minute of play.  The Owls lost momentum towards the middle of the first half and conceded a goal in the 24th minute.  The game was back and forth for the remainder of the first half with neither team having a good look at the goal.  Kevin Remmick scored another Slinger goal in the first minutes of the second half.  Throughout the rest of the game, the Owls played solid defense.  With two seconds left in the game, goalkeeper Zach Scherbert committed a foul in the box but then saved the Watertown penalty kick, helping Slinger keep their 2-1 lead.  Come out to support the Owls at their next game against Arrowhead this Friday!

A Tuesday Book Review: Tiger's Curse by Colleen Houck

Kelsey Hayes, a seventeen year old high school graduate finds herself looking for a job at a local temporary job office in Oregon.  She has been assigned to work at a small family-run circus called Circus Maurizio with a group of dogs and a white tiger!  Kelsey connects with the white tiger called Dhiren. One day while working at the circus, a strange man approaches her and asks about purchasing Dhiren.  The man claims that his employer owns a tiger sanctuary in India and that he wants Dhiren in the sanctuary.  Plans are made for Dhiren to travel to India, but last minute plans are made and Kelsey is invited to come help with the handling of Dhiren.  Little does she know that the tiger has a deep and ancient secret.  He’s really a Prince from the ancient Indian kingdom of Mujulaain!  Kelsey is led into the thick tropical forests of India to find a hut belonging to an old hermit named Phet.  At this hut, Ren finally reveals his secret to Kelsey and they set off, girl and tiger, to break THE TIGER’S CURSE and along the way they may find love and learn the hardships of sacrifice. I chose this book to review because there’s a love triangle hidden within the story that puts a twist on things here and there.  I’m not going to say who is all caught up in the triangle because it would give away some of the story, but what I will say is that Colleen Houck did an amazing job portraying the internal conflicts that everyone has when faced with a huge decision.  She also added in global components and mythical creatures to turn the story into a romantic fantasy novel.

Slinger Girls' Tennis Crushes Hartford

This past Thursday, the girls of Slinger tennis greatly added to their conference wins with a 5-2 victory against Hartford. Pulling in the final point was Emma Sievers, who won her match in three sets against a worthy opponent. The girls went on to play at the Martin Luther Invite this weekend and will play again this coming Tuesday at Beaver Dam.

Mighty Owls overpower Goslings 35-7

After a back and forth scoreless first quarter, Tyler Reinhardt sparked the Slinger attack with a long touchdown run and an interception to follow.  Slinger's power upfront on the line was too much for the Goslings to handle.  The Owls (4-0) host Beaver Dam (1-3) next Friday on band night.

Last year, anyone 18 years old or older with a valid driver's license had the opportunity to raise money for the school by test driving cars. For each car that was tested, Uptown Chrysler/Dodge donated $20. The total amount of money raised from this event was $3,380. Half went to SkillsUSA and was used to pay for the travel expenses and competition. The other half of the money went to Relay For Life (American Cancer Society) and helped SkillsUSA be recognized as the highest fundraising youth team for the fourth year in a row.

SkillsUSA, the student organization behind this fundraiser, is a school club that focuses on technical and leadership skills. If you’re interested in becoming part of this organization, here’s a few things you need to know: you must be enrolled in a Tech Ed course, and you must participate in group fundraisers that help cover the expenses of traveling for competition. Slinger Loses to East, Looks ahead to Hartford

The Slinger Owls varsity tennis team fell to last season’s Little Ten conference champions, West Bend East, on Wednesday, September 9 with a final score of 2-6. The match was cancelled Tuesday and rescheduled for Wednesday following rain showers Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday’s victories for the Owls included a number one singles win from senior Emma Sievers and a third set win from senior Kylie Coffin at number four singles. The team will face conference rival, Hartford, on Thursday, September 10 at 4:00 pm on Slinger’s courts. 

2015 Powder Puff Football Games Fast Approaching

Are you ready for some football? Slinger High School will be hosting its annual Powder Puff football games on September 30. A practice will be held on Monday, September 28 at 6:00 pm in preparation for the big games so the girls have an opportunity to brush up on their skills before game night. Both the practice and the games will be held on the Slinger High School football field. On Wednesday, September 30, the freshman team will face off against the sophomore team at 6:30 PM, and the juniors will fiercely take on the seniors at 7:30.

 

Student Council is providing food and fun to make the Powder Puff games an enjoyable experience for the competitors and the fans that attend. Delicious treats such as pizza, popcorn, cotton candy, and refreshments will be present, in addition to face painting and entertaining carnival games. Anyone is welcome to come and cheer on the girls, as it will be a fun event for students, staff, Slinger community members, and family members of the players. Also, any girls that show up the night of Powder Puff and wish to play may do so regardless of whether their name was on the sign-up sheet or not.

 

Slinger Tennis Pulls Ahead of Oconomowoc

The girls of Slinger tennis won their opening conference meet against Oconomowoc Thursday. Pulling through on the final matches of both Varsity and JV, it was a close competition. In the hard fought end, Slinger won 4-3 at Varsity and 11-10 at JV. This victory was an honor to all those who attended Parents' Night and support their daughters throughout the season. The players will compete against the former conference champions, West Bend East, next Tuesday.

A Tough Loss For The Slinger Men's Soccer Team

The Slinger varsity boys' soccer team lost 2-3 last night in a competitive battle against a talented Cedarburg team.  The Owls played very well and almost ended the game in a tie, but the Bulldogs scored their final goal in the last 5 minutes of the match.  Join the Owls for their next game at West Bend West on September 8th!
